As documented in the Dictionary of Traditional Chinese Medicine, cranberry leaves exhibit diuretic and detoxifying properties, and are commonly used to address rheumatism and gout. Its fruits, on the other hand, can alleviate pain and treat dysentery. According to the United States Pharmacopeia, cranberries have long served as an adjuvant in combating cystitis and urinary tract infections (UTIs), with their therapeutic effects widely recognized. Additionally, cranberries are rich in a variety of beneficial bioactive compounds, including hypericin, pentahydroxyflavones, and anthocyanins, which underpin their diverse health-promoting functions.

1、Prevention of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
The most distinctive benefit of cranberries lies in their ability to effectively prevent UTIs. Approximately 80% to 90% of UTIs are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli). Scholars worldwide have researched the mechanism behind this function for years. Early studies suggested that the various acidic substances in cranberries could increase the acidity of urine in the bladder, creating a strongly acidic environment that inhibits the growth of E. coli in the urethra. In 1998, a study led by scientist Howell AB and colleagues from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, was the first to confirm that the active component responsible for inhibiting UTIs in cranberries is concentrated tannic acid—specifically, procyanidins (PACs) isolated from cranberries. Procyanidins, a form of concentrated tannins, are primarily oligomers or polymers of epicatechin. Cranberries contain 34.3 mg of procyanidins per 100 g. Numerous subsequent studies have demonstrated that PACs possess anti-bacterial adhesion properties, preventing pathogenic bacteria like E. coli from attaching to the epithelial cells of the urethra and bladder wall. These pathogens are then flushed out with urine, thereby reducing the risk of UTIs.

2、Anti-Helicobacter pylori Activity
Cranberries contain compounds such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid, phenolic acids, and resveratrol, all of which exhibit antibacterial properties. Extensive research has shown that cranberries can inhibit Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, making them effective in preventing gastric ulcers, gastric cancer, and duodenal ulcers.

3、Antioxidant Effects
The flavonoids in cranberries exert antioxidant activity both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, flavonols and procyanidins among these flavonoids play a role in preventing atherosclerosis.

4、Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases
Cranberries are abundant in various flavonoid compounds, including hyperoside, pentahydroxyflavones, and myricetin—along with anthocyanins, these compounds determine the fruit’s color. Flavonols, in particular, have strong antioxidant activity: they can inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and reduce blood triglyceride levels, thereby supporting human cardiovascular health.

5、Oral and Dental Protection
Research has found that extracts from cranberry juice can disrupt oral bacterial communities—especially Streptococcus mutans in saliva, a key contributor to dental caries and plaque formation. This action helps protect tooth health.

6、Blood Pressure Regulation
Cranberries are naturally low in sodium and high in potassium, a nutritional profile that supports blood pressure management. Studies have further revealed that cranberry juice promotes the production of nitric oxide by vascular endothelial cells; nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels, which in turn helps lower blood pressure—providing a clear mechanism for cranberries’ role in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. In a study by Apostolidis et al., water-soluble cranberry extract was mixed with oregano, rosemary, and Rhodiola extracts. The researchers tested the mixture’s inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase, pancreatic α-amylase, and angiotensin-converting enzyme 1 (ACE-1), while also evaluating its antioxidant activity and potential benefits for diabetes and hypertension. Results showed that combining cranberry extract with other components significantly enhanced its ability to inhibit α-glucosidase, pancreatic α-amylase, and ACE-1—confirming that cranberry juice extract not only has antioxidant properties but also supports blood pressure reduction and diabetes prevention.
